The symptoms of mediastinal emphysema may include discomfort or pain in the sternum, shortness of breath, and loss of consciousness. The latter two would be the result of trapped gases pressing against the lungs, heart and large blood vessels, thereby interfering with breathing and/or blood circulation. This might also be evidenced by blueness(cyanosis) of the skin, lips or fingernails.
